The energy industry and the impact of sector change on its people & culture

12/1/2018

This is a very interesting paper from Deloitte on the impact of the significant changes in energy solutions, technology, and customer expectations on the skills, culture and people requirements in the energy industry.
I estimate these changes will possibly take a decade to flow through properly but for an industry that is used to stable, life-long careers, 40 year asset lifecycles and predictable technical solutions, this paper highlights the shift in mindset and culture required now to prepare for the future in the face of industry uncertainty.

Where is technology taking jobs, income distribution & meaning?

A very thought-provoking article suggesting we are moving into an era where technology supports economic growth and production that will not produce alternative jobs.  This means economic growth shifts from being an economic problem to a political problem where jobs need to be replaced or supplemented by an alternative means of distributing access to products, services, lifestyle and meaning.

Change leadership is not change management

25/7/2017

Dr John Kotter speaks about the significant difference between "change leadership" and "change management".

Change management involves processes to control and contain change whereas change leadership is "putting an engine on the whole change process". and creating transformation. Change leadership allows for the messiness of change and harnesses the energy of people to innovate, solve complex problems and make a difference in the world in unexpected ways.

Kotter asserts that change leadership is a skill that is largely missing in the world.  Maybe this partly explains why attempts at transformation so often fail.

Business design and community & culture transformation

20/9/2016

A recent Harvard Business Review article by Connie Duckworth, the CEO of ARZU (Hope), provides an inspiring story of how design thinking principles applied to the rug-making business she started in Afghanistan have deliberately created a business that has transformed the lives of its female Afghan workers and their children.  Incomes have increased and incentives and social infrastructure have transformed the health, education and well-being of the female workers and their families.

This is a community perspective on effective change management and innovation and demonstrates the kind of systems thinking that is necessary for effective organisational change anywhere.

Liquid filled glasses for 1 billion people

31/1/2016

Josh Silver estimates that half the world's population needs eyeglasses but many do not have access to them. He has a goal that his adjustable, liquid-filled lenses will get to 1Billion of the world's poor people in need of glasses by 2020. A brilliantly simple invention and an example of innovative value creation and how the right solution can turn non-customers into customers.  Read more about how this is being rolled out today at:  http://www.vdwoxford.org/about/#mission

Avi Dan points out that:  "Disruptive brands understand consumer trends before they become trends and capitalize on them better than their competitors. Many of these brands understand the shift to a sharing economy and have designed their business model accordingly."

David Morrison - Australian of the year and a great example of leadership of culture

26/1/2016

The announcement today of David Morrison, ex-head of the Australian Army, as the 2016 Australian of the Year is to be applauded as another step towards reshaping Australian workplace culture to be more inclusive of diversity.  This interview with Anne Summers last year shows some of David's qualities as a leader and his personal commitment to leading culture change.  Worth watching as a powerful example of leadership values and behaviour that can shape change.

Innovation, diversity of thinking and the necessity of strangers - some tips

16/1/2016

"99% of all new ideas are based on the ideas and insights of others - often strangers"  These strangers could be customers, they could come from another industry sector, from another time in history, or even another species. One of my favourite books from 2015 is Alan Gregerman's The Necessity of Strangers which challenges us to step outside what we are familiar with and connect with strangers to accelerate breakthrough thinking and innovation.  Here is a talk he gave.
