Tools & frameworks for innovation & change
Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS) is globally recognised as a world-leading model for the formulation, validation and execution of innovative strategy and transformational change. It is the result of 30 years of research and consulting experience by Insead Professors W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne and has been used around the world by governments, organisations and individuals to develop and implement innovative strategy and transformational change.
It emphasises engaging impacted people from the start in a fair process that humanises change so that people buy in to the change and make it work. The research, the BOS concepts, and the analytical tools and frameworks were the basis of their international best selling book Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make the Competition Irrelevant, first published in 2005 and updated in 2015. You can see a few uTube videos on their approach if you click on this link.
In 2017 Kim and Mauborgne published a new book, Blue Ocean Shift, which acts as a user's guide for the practical application of tools and processes from their Blue Ocean Strategy consultancy work. These tools offer a step-by-step process for applying Blue Ocean thinking to examine what is, explore what could be, and assess what will work in transformational strategy and change.
The Blue Ocean Strategy approach with its innovative thinking, engagement of people, and simple practical tools and frameworks aligns better than any other model I have found with what I have learnt actually works best in delivering successful strategy and change in organisations.
How to use Blue Ocean Strategy?
I use the BOS tools and frameworks in many areas of my work, particularly where there is a need to:
I often use elements for any kind of strategy development, challenging limiting mindsets in teams, in workshops where there is a need for innovative thinking and problem solving, and in any kind of transformational or even small scale change. It can help with problems like these:
A method for tackling wicked problems
Wicked problems are ones that are difficult or nearly impossible to solve because of contradictory, changing requirements, complex interdependencies and where there is no one right answer. Organisational or social change is a wicked problem.
Our 8 Step Roadmap incorporates some of these frameworks and tools and provides a structure for working on a problem in a way that:
So if you are looking for help with innovative strategy and planning, transformational change or want an innovative approach to organisational or community problem solving and change, I highly recommend Blue Ocean Shift – and give me call if you need help with applying this in your organisation.

- Expand people’s possibility thinking
- Humanise the strategy or change process by inspiring, engaging and building the confidence of the people who need to make change work, and
- Provide tools and guidance to support more innovative value-adding outcomes.

- How can I develop a solution that adds exceptional value whilst reducing costs
- How could my team add more value to their customers and to organisational outcomes
- How could I get buy-in to transformational change that works
- How could I help people shift old mindsets and look at the problem through fresh eyes?

Our 8 Step Roadmap incorporates some of these frameworks and tools and provides a structure for working on a problem in a way that:
- helps people see what is through different eyes, including the customers’ eyes
- explores possibilities they have probably never considered before
- engages them in discovering, generating and assessing innovative solutions, and
- helps them select an option for implementation.
